Standing water starts to become contaminated after 24 hours.Choose an extraction methodThere are several different types of extraction methods. The volume of water and size of the space would determine which method you would use. The various methods to choose from, ranking from largest volume of water to least would be truck mounted extraction units, submersible pumps and wet dry vacuums.Note: Wet/dry vacuums would only be used when there is very little water to extract. They are very good with puddle-sized areas. Any size beyond that would need to be stepped up to a submersible pump or truck mounted extraction unit.Vacuum remaining water with a wet/dry vacWhen all if the water is extracted, it is a good idea to pass over the affected area with a wet/dry vacuum. This way, we can pick up any moisture that was left behind and prevent secondary damage from forming. There are two types of wet/dry vacuums. Ones with regular filters and ones with HEPA filters. Many of our clients wonder which filters are the best. Our answer? It depends on the situation. If we identify a hazardous substance such as mold, lead or asbestos, we will use a wet/dry vacuum with a HEPA filter for an additional precaution. On the other jobs however, we will simply use a regular filter.Dry the spaceUsing dehumidifiers and air movers placed within the recommendations of the IICRC, dry the remaining moisture that is left after the water extraction has taken place. Water extraction, when done correctly should remove 99% of the existing moisture. It should only take about 3 days to dry the remaining moisture present.Disinfect the areaOne of the best reasons to go with a professional company for your basement water extraction case is that we have access to the strongest and safest disinfectants on the market. It is always wise to apply a disinfectant to the affected area after the drying process has completed. This way, you are able to kill any remaining bacteria that has lingered form the previous moisture. Many of the disinfectants that you can find at the home supply stores do not address everything, and are not as safe to use as the commercial products.
